Lenox was platted in 1888, when the railroad was extended to that point. According to tradition, the town was named after a certain “lean ox”. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the town in 1901.

Lenox is located in northern Cook County at 3116N 8328W 31.267N 83.467W 31.267 -83.467 31.2712, -83.4654. U.S. Route 41 passes through the center of the town as Robinson Street, and Interstate 75 passes through the west side of the town, with access from Exit 49.
