K Duyn was born on 30 June 1965 in Saigon, South Vietnam as the only daughter to Nguyn Cao K, a former South Vietnamese Prime Minister, Vice President, and Air-Force General. At around the age of ten during the Fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975, she moved to the United States. Her mother is Dang Tuyet Mai who was from Bac Ninh and spent most of her childhood in Ha Noi. In 1953, she and her family moved to the South of Vienam and located in Da Lat, Dang Tuyet Mai studied at Da Lat Yersin Highschool. Being well educated which made Dang Tuyet Mai use English and French fluently. Before getting married, she was one of 4 air hostesses for Air Vietnam. Dang Tuyet Mai met Nguyen Cao Ky on a trip from Manila to Vietnam.
When first moving to America, Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen lived in Fairfax, Virginia then later moved to Huntington Beach, California in which she studied at Marian Highschool. She enrolled law major at Western State University and graduated with an honorary.
